Recently there has been a lot of
uproar about the possibility of mid level managers in IT companies in India getting the pink slip . The big reason attributed to this situation
is that these managers have become redundant as their current skill doesn't meet
the needs of the organization. This issue is a wake up call for people in all
industries. Updating of skills is perhaps the biggest issue in the IT industry
. However, this doesn’t mean that other industries can go scot free. The need for skilling is pervasive and the threat of people losing their
job in any industry due to lack of skills is surreptitious and sneaks up on you when you
least expect it. People may be able to
survive on some basic skills needed to do the job. However, lot more needs to
be done if one has to move from the Security level to the Self Actualization level in the Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. This is where skilling becomes a
critical component.
The whole problem starts when
people have reached some level of satisfaction and get into to a lay-back attitude. Over a period of time they
find out the hard way that their skills
is no longer useful to the management or the management is seeking higher level
of performance for which he is not equipped.
All industries demand updated skills. An accountant needs to update his
skills in emerging new concepts in
accounting, ERP,etc ;HR professions needs to constantly update his skills in emerging global practices current changes in statutory compliance, etc ; A mechanical engineer
needs to adapt & learn new methodologies in production, quality, etc as
production techniques & volumes are rapidly changing ; A teacher ( most
important) needs to update his knowledge in the subject he is teaching so he can share this with students and
empower them to take on the on challenges that life is going to throw at them . So Wake up, it is not just the IT community
that needs regular update in skills, We all need it !!
